Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

DFRN FAQ

  • What is DFRN?
DFRN provides a convergent bio-recycling solution that combines AI-designed, high-activity PETase (a plastic-degrading enzyme) engineering and scale-up with automated fiber/non-fiber separation. With our proprietary technologies, discarded apparel is transformed back into textile or plastic feedstock.
  • What problem was DFRN created to solve?
By leveraging biotechnology and process automation, we upcycle post-consumer and industrial textile waste to fundamentally address the waste problem and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Operating at low temperatures and low energy, we convert apparel waste into recycled fibers or high-purity TPA to help tackle broader plastic issues and enable sustainable circularity.
  • What is ‘re-fine’ and how does it work?
re-fine uses micro-airflow to create a wave effect that maximizes density-based separation, automatically removing accessories (zippers, buttons, etc.) from garments for resource recovery.
  • What is ‘re-biorth’?
re-biorth is a biological depolymerization technology that uses PETase enzymes to depolymerize polyester, instead of conventional chemical routes.
  • What sets ‘re-biorth’ apart?
Powered by our AI-driven dry-lab system, we learn from and improve upon state-of-the-art enzymes, accelerating development speed and performance.
  • How is your approach different from traditional recycling?
For pre-processing, legacy methods rely on manual accessory removal or high-power centrifuges. re-fine delivers higher accuracy and better economics at lower power.
For core recycling, our biological depolymerization overcomes typical mechanical/chemical limits with: (1) lower energy use, (2) lower capital intensity, and (3) mitigation of wastewater issues. Our enzyme design emphasizes stability (e.g., pH tolerance) and high efficiency against highly crystalline substrates—delivering differentiated performance and cost advantages versus chemical or other bio-catalytic methods.
  • What types of garments/materials can you process?
Most apparel categories—bags, hoodies, T-shirts, padded outerwear, and more—are supported for pre-processing. Shoe pre-processing is under active R&D.
  • How do you minimize environmental impact?
We pursue a cloth-to-cloth closed loop: converting garments back to feedstock and then into new garments, significantly reducing landfilling and incineration.
  • How are the recovered materials used?
Materials processed via re-fine are re-manufactured by partners into recycled yarns, eco-felts, industrial wipes, or pellets. Chips (pellets) produced in the resource-recovery stage can be further depolymerized via re-biorth into TPA (terephthalic acid) and EG (ethylene glycol), feedstocks for a wide range of plastics and fibers.
  • Who are you working with today?
We have an MOU with Lindström (industrial workwear services) and collaborate with spinning/weaving partners for sampling and trials.
  • Is DFRN a B2B-only service?
Yes. We currently provide a stock apparel recycling management solution and an industrial apparel recycling solution for B2B clients.
  • Do you have global partnership cases?
Building on our MOU with Lindström, we are expanding our international network and formalizing additional partnerships.
  • Do you support bespoke projects?
Yes. As we are in a pilot-line phase, scope and volumes are confirmed through consultation.
  • How does the collection process work?
We operate pickup with our own vehicles. No separate collection fee is charged.
  • What is your processing capacity?
Our pilot line can process ~10 tons.
  • Do you serve nationwide?
Yes, with the caveat that Jeju and mountainous regions may require separate arrangements.
  • What are the minimum volumes?
30 kg+ for research purposes; 1 ton+ for full solution deployments.
  • Can I request a demo or a site visit?
Absolutely—please contact us through the website inquiry channel for scheduling and guidance.
